Welcome to the Art Center

In the early 1990’s, negotiations were undertaken with the city of Corpus Christi to take over a building at 100 Shoreline.  That building was to be vacated of city workers and possibly torn down.  The bay front building had originally been built as a USO Club during WWII.  Through the persistent efforts of Dorothy Kucera and her committee, funds were raised and agreements reached with the city leaders.  The result was a beautifully located new home for the Art Community Center.

At the start of this new century, a major remodeling of the old building turned it into the attractive multi- purpose facility it is today.  Major funding was provided by the Devary Durrill Foundation for a massive expansion project.

The Art Center of Corpus Christi, as it is now known, has grown to include 11 art organizations.  It maintains five spaces that can support art shows of different sizes.  There are studios where member groups can meet and work together or where invited guest artists can hold large workshops.  Desiree’s, a popular lunchtime restaurant, leases space within the Center.  In addition, the Art Center of Corpus Christi is a venue available for weddings, receptions, parties and special events for outside organizations.

The Art Center of Corpus Christi, a 501[c] (3) nonprofit,  Is governed by a  Board made up of interested people from the community.  The membership at large elects 4 members to sit on this board which is known as the Board of Governors.  An Executive Committee, made up of Board officers plus at least one of the Art Centers elected members, is responsible for the day to day operations of the Center. A second body, the Group Representatives Forum, is made up of a delegate from each of the art organizations belonging to the Art Center. These “Group Reps.” meet monthly.  Their concerns, proposals and recommendations are passed up to the Executive Committee. The Board employs a Managing Director.  Presently, that is Bob Baker.

All individual members and groups pay annual dues.  Member groups and invited individuals mount exhibits and shows that change monthly and support the Center.  All exhibits and shows are free to the public. A bi-monthly newsletter ArtBeat is published and a website www.artcentercc.org  is maintained. Member Volunteers are very important to the daily workings of the facility.  The Art Center also does several fundraisers during the year.

The Art Center of Corpus Christi continues to grow and evolve.  Our goal is to become the premier regional education center for the arts and continue to provide a good home for our member artists, art groups and community supporters. We aspire to serve the people of Corpus Christi by being an open and welcoming place where interesting and ever-changing local art is exhibited and enjoyed.  We are proud to display the creative energies of the many among us who, as well as being neighbors, fellow workers, students or friends, are also driven to be artists.

Situated on the Corpus Christi bayfront, the Art Center boasts a beautiful view.
